Description:
Price Reduced - Very Rare and Very Early Martially Inspected Colt Flask: Referred to as the Walker flask by most collectors and reference books. This flask was made during the era of the Walker and the Transition Walker (Whitneyville Hartford Dragoon) and First Model Dragoon. The body has the “COLTS PATENT” located on the ribbon at the bottom. The hinged ball cover on the top is also marked “COLT’S PATENT” and also bears two sets of inspector’s initials WAT (William Anderson Thornton) and “K”. This flask retains the following feature from the original Walker flask. An excerpt by Mr.”Red” Jackson from Robin Rapley’s “Colt Percussion Accoutrements, 1834 – 1873, page 113: “The top is the plunger style and the ball compartment, located adjacent to the top, has the nearly round-shouldered lid with “COLT’S PATENT” in the shallow oval. This Colt stamp is otherwise found only on Walker single, double, and gang molds, the first (approximately fifty) Whitneyville-Hartford and a few early Dragoon flasks made by Dixon”. Page 111: “Another major identifying feature of the Walker flask is the stamping on the ball compartment cover. The COLT’S PATENT is in the form of a shallow oval. This identifying feature also is found only on all Walker single, double, and six cavity bullet molds and on the first fifty or so Whitneyville-Hartford Dragoons, which after serial number 1150 had the now-familiar “COLTS PATENT” in two parallel lines”. These two excerpts indicate that this flask is a very rare early production flask. The flask retains a generous amount of lacquer. It has some dents on the neck/upper part of the body of the flask.
