Description:
#20115, Cogswell & Harrison 142 New Bond St. & 226 Strand, London: An Anson & Deeley Actioned Cogswell & Harrison Toplever Hammerless 500 3" Black Powder Express Double Rifle Made in 1888 with Excellent Plus Bores, It is with 28" extractor steel barrels with dovetail lumps, Dolls Head Rib extension with a third bite, 1 standing & 1 folding platinum lined rear sights, Double underlugs with double bite, Double triggers, Top tang safety, Long trigger guard tang to a horn grip cap, Shadowline cheekpiece, Sling eyes, 15" lop over a 5/8" pad, 8 lbs. 11 oz., 75% coverage of very fine scroll engraving that is very well cut, Excellent deluxe wood with great color and contrast, This neat piece retains 35% original case colors, The barrels have been very professionally reblacked and the striking remains excellent plus, The bores are excellent to very near excellent plus and totally represent the overall condition of this gun, The stock has had oil added but appears it was never sanded, The checkering is sharp and crisp. It is cased in a brass cornered leather trunk that remains in very nice condition. This is one nice double rifle in a great cartridge, excellent engraving, and excellent wood, excellent bores and built around the superb Anson & Deeley action. This is not your ordinary Cogswell & Harrison double gun. This neat little piece has a modern track record with very good accuracy using a 365 grain Montana Precision cast bullet at .512" with 51 & 53.5 grains of 4198 under 9 grains of dacron fill, That load shoots spot on to the point of aim. It also was shot with 330 grain Montana Precision bullets but the 365 grain did the best. //////////////////////////////// The frame is marked Patent but without a number. It most likely is Patent #14,444 of 1887 by Edgar Harrison & Edwin Anson. Patent #1756 is one of the greatest of all landmarks in the history of the sporting gun, the Anson & Deeley boxlock. This patent was taken out May 11, 1875 by Mr. William Anson and Mr. John Deeley. This gun isn't your Dad's Cogswell & Harrison; it is your great Grandfather's gun. This piece had the immediate touch of Mr. Edgar Harrison of Cogswell & Harrison as it was built in 1888.
