Description:
RARE MARTIAL .44 CAL. HENRY RIFLE SER. # 8647 INSCRIBED STEPHEN SOURS, CO. E. 3TH REGT., U.S.V.V. Well documented, all original circa 1865 Civil War Henry rifle – one of 127 issued to the 3rd Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteers and inscribed on the left side of the frame in old original period script. U.S. Government Archives lists numerous other 3rd Regiment Henry Rifles in the same serial range including numbers 8648, 8650 and 8652. Serial number 8622 is similarly inscribed to “T. PFEIFER, CO. B, 3RD REGT. U.S. VET. VOL. INF”. Private Stephen Sours enlisted Aug. 12, 1861 at Hughesville, Pa. and was assigned to the 106th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded at Antietam. After recovery he served with the 2nd Battalion Veteran Reserve Corps until his discharge in August 1864. He reenlisted in March 1865 at Williamsport, Pa. in the 3rd Regt. U.S.V.V. He was finally discharged at Springfield, Il. On Mar. 3, 1866. He undoubtedly took his Henry with him. In fine condition with a beautifully mellowed mustard color frame and nice, deep grey barrel patina. All matching serial numbers and crisp barrel address stamp. Stock with the original nicely patinated finish. Original front and rear sights. Very nice bore and in perfect working order. Fine collection provenance and accompanied by a well done research folio.
