Description:

This LC Smith 16 gauge Field Grade shotgun, serial number 179741, was manufactured in 1939. It has 28” Armor Steel barrels choked Improved Cylinder (.007) and Modified (.015). The lettering on the top of the barrels is crisp and the bores are bright. The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 035/.027/.035 and at the middle of the barrel is .035/.030/.035; the left barrel is .035/.030/.035 and .037/.037/.037, respectively. Bores 9” from the breach are .658/.658 respectively. Chambers are 2-3/4 with lengthened forcing cones. The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to the right of center. The recoil pad is an old but still serviceable Hawkins. All serial numbers match. This Feather Weight model weighs 6 lb 9 oz. The drop at the comb is 1-5/8” and at the heel 2-3/4”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the recoil pad is 13-3/4”. The stock is without cracks, which is often a problem with LC Smiths and other vintage side locks, and the wood at the interface with the action is solid. The vintage shotgun is properly restored to bring it back to the condition is would have been after 5 to 10 years of use by the original owner. Layers of old lacquer on the stock and the forearm were removed, checkering was cleaned, dents and scratches removed to the degree possible while preserving the character of the gun, and a stock oil finish applied. The preparation of the metal to be re-case-hardened was entirely by hand, and the color case hardening was done by Classic Guns in Crete, IL. The barrels were hand sanded to base metal and re-blued using the slow rust blue process. The forearm metal and trigger guard are niter blued. The seller will ship this gun in a hard case. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt by buyer. Also, it carries a 30-day warrantee, during which the seller will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost. Seller has fired this shotgun on skeet and sporting clay ranges using standard factory 2-3/4” target loads. However, as for any vintage shotguns it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing.
