Description:
This is a special order Winchester High Wall with a combination of features rarely seen together. One of a kind and more rare than a Schuetzen. It was made and shipped in 1910. Apparently someone wanted a “Varmint Rife” about 30 years before they were the vogue. They ordered it from the factory rather than cannibalizing a rifle for the action and having it rebarrelled to a varmint caliber.
This is a takedown high wall in 25-35 WCF. As stipulated by the included factory letter, it has a round 28 inch number 3 weight barrel. The barrel is inscribed on the side (11:00 o’clock position) in two places. The first line 1: “Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company”, Line 2: “New Haven Conn. USA Patented Oct. 7, 79. May 28, 07.” The second inscription also on the side - line 1: “ ---- Nickel Steel Barrel ----“ Line 2: “Especially for Smokeless Powder”. The 25 - 35 WCF stamp is also on the side. Target scope blocks are attached and included.
The rifle has Schuetzen double set triggers with the longer standard “S” lever. The action is blued while the breech block, hammer and lever are color case hardened. The stock and for end are checkered fancy walnut. The butt stock has a pistol grip and check piece with hard rubber Winchester grip cap. The composition butt plate is Winchester marked rifle with the pointed upper tang. The stock appears to be original to the rifle. The rifle was ordered with the special fly that leaves the rifle at half cock when the action is closed. This rifle was also ordered with the barrel lapped – see factory letter.
The rifle appears to match the letter and be factory original. I am not a Winchester collector/expert, so don't guarantee that it has not been altered/refinished. I've posted several pictures for your evaluation. This is a beautiful rifle in excellent condition – the bore is mirror bright. Everything functions as it should like a new rifle
