Description:
Type II Springfield Officers rifle. Fine condition. These were built by Springfield for private purchase by officers in the 1870 to 1890 period. They estimate that only around 550 of these rifles were ever mfg and are agruably one of the most desirable military associated weapons ever mfg.  They were only offered  to commissioned officers and never sold to the public, hense no serial numbers were ever applied to any off these guns but if you examine the records of who owned them,  it was a whos who of the Indian wars and includes Bill Cody of which the photograph of him with his officers model is quite famous and often seen in books.  It is a facinating story and one can only wonder who ordered thsi rifle.  It is clear that this is not and was not a closet queen and was used on the frontier by a high ranking military officer.  The gun was fully disassembled and every single part of this gun is correct Springfield officers model parts. The engraving is very nice. The metel is all turning a nice plumb brown but has no cancer or anything that would be offensive.  We have seen several mint examples of this rifle sell in excess of 25K but this rifle,  showing use and care over the years,  may be the most affordable example that we have seen and one that more than likely saw quite a bit of western history in the interum.  The wood is fine with a few handling marks but overall a very nice rifle for the price and a rare piece of western history.
