Description: The ZB 53 was the attempt of the Czechoslovak arms industry to produce a modern medium machine gun to replace the obsolete Schwarzlose. It was adopted by the Czechoslovak army in 1937 after several rounds of modifications and designated the Vz. 37. The gas operated, air-cooled, belt fed weapon fired from an open bolt, is equipped with a quick change barrel, and fired the 7.92x57 or 8mm Mauser. The firearm was designed to have selectable fire, slower cyclic rates of around 500rpm for ground to ground use and faster cyclic rates of 700-800rpm for anti-aircraft applications. The ZB 53 met with success, two thirds of Czechoslovak produced weapons exported to other countries including; China, Iran, Romania, and Yugoslavia, among others. UK purchased rights to produce their own version for tank mounted use and called it the “Besa”. Production continued during the German occupation from 1939-41 and was referred to as the MG 37(t) in German small arms nomenclature. The firearm was produced until the 1950s.This model appears to have been made in Czechoslovak marked Vz. 37 and was demilitarized then later rebuilt by Wise Lite Arms of Boyd, TX. It comes atop a stand (that can be converted from a ground to ground orientation to an anti-aircraft orientation), two ammo cans, several ammo belts, and one belt of dummy rounds for display. This firearm has been converted from an open bolt fully automatic to a closed bolt semi-automatic design and is functional in this capacity.
