Description:
Serial #324977, .45 ACP/Auto-Rim, 5 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very mild freckling within the grooves towards the breech. This is a 1926-made revolver that retains 90% plus of the original blue finish that has faded at the muzzle as well as along the exposed edges and also has a moderate turn-ring around the base of the cylinder. The revolver is marked chambered for ".45 Colt" which is common on .45 ACP New Services shipped before it became a standard chambering in 1933. The revolver also has numbered, Colt custom quality medallion grips and a checkered backstrap. The revolver is almost identical in configuration to (and numbered quite closely to) a known revolver shipped on March 21, 1928 to W.H. Hoegee Co. of Los Angeles for a Lt. Harry Hager (LAPD). The speculation is that this was representative of guns issued to the so-called "Hat Squad"; a group of detectives of "large stature", and a May 21, 2013 dated Colt letter accompanies the revolver which does indeed confirm shipment on September 24, 1926 to Cline & Cline of Los Angeles, CA (as one of 25 such guns in the shipment). This is a terrific example of a New Service revolver which could very well be a secondary LAPD issue gun. {Ref: "Colt New Service Revolvers" by Bob Murphy (1985); "Colt's New Service Revolver - 'A Particularly Strong, Heavy Weapon'" by Timothy J.
