Description: Serial #88864, .45 ACP, 5? barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a 1914-made pistol that has retained 75-80% of the original blue finish that has faded to smooth plum-brown on some of the exposed edges and also exhibits silvering along the front portion of the slide, nose of the frame, and along the gripstraps. The markings and ?WGP? inspector stamps are still crisp and clear with the addition of some unit added markings on the right side of the frame just behind the trigger guard: ?D.L.J./10 PA.? (10th Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserve Defense Corps). The checkered walnut double-diamond grips are in very good plus condition with some flattening of the points and scattered minor handling marks and minor blemishes, mostly at the butt on both panels, and a single correct, two-tone lanyard loop magazine is included. The fit is still very tight without any rattling between the slide and frame and the pistol rates very good-fine condition overall. The Pennsylvania Reserve Defense Corps was founded by Gov. Arthur B. James on March 19, 1941, under the provisions of the State Guard Act, to provide Pennsylvania with a state controlled military force to provide general security during the draft. The force was renamed Pennsylvania State Guard in 1943 and was composed of those deemed unfit or otherwise unsuitable for federal service and had an age limit of 21 to 50 with no age limit for officers. The enlisted members of the force were armed with U.S. Model 1903 rifles and Reising submachine guns but officers were expected to provide their own sidearms, such as this World War I Model 1911. The force started with 1,934 members growing to 5,700 men at its height organized into five infantry regiments (the 10th was one of these), one cavalry squadron, and one battalion of engineers. The force remained in service after the war but was finally disbanded following the Korean War armistice in 1953. This is a great looking World War I Colt with a neat World War II state military connection and would make a fine addition to any collection.
