Description:
Serial #7275, 7.65mm Para. (.30 Luger), 4 3/4? barrel with a fine bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is a non ?GERMANY? marked, unproofed pistol with American Eagle chamber crest that has retained about 80% of the original blue finish that has faded to mottled gray along the muzzle-end of the barrel as well as on the exposed edges and surfaces of both the frame and receiver. The pistol has all matching numbers and has specks of minor freckling along the metal borders and a few spots of pinprick pitting at the muzzle and on the frame above the trigger on the right side as well. Traces of original straw color remains on the trigger, ejector, magazine release, and safety while the take-down lever (numbered on the left side rather than the right) has been gently cleaned to a bright gray. The pistol has a sporting replacement brass bead front sight blade and the checkered wooden grips, numbered to the gun on the interior, have light-moderate wear throughout with some flattening of the points and small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout. Additionally, a previous owner has lightly scratched some faint initials onto the left side of the frame and on the sideplate: ?C? and ?CV?. The pistol comes with a single wood base magazine (numbered to the gun) and falls into the tail end of the known 1900 Test Luger serial range (last known documented is serial #7403). These pistols were used by the U.S. Army to gauge the durability and effectiveness of an automatic pistol in service use and were subjected to both controlled tests and limited field issue to various units posted around the United States. These tests (plus the experience gained fighting Moro tribesmen during the Philippine Insurrection) would eventually result in the adoption of the Browning designed Colt Model 1911 pistol in .45 caliber. By 1906-1907 these Model 1900 Luger pistols had been recalled to Springfield Armory and removed from government service for sale at where Francis Bannerman & Sons purchased the bulk of them buying 780 units at a cost of $10.00 apiece. This is a very nice example of a historically significant American Luger and would make a great addition to any collection. {Ref. ?U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920? by E.
