Sterlingworth guns in 20ga. are seen often enough. Anybody who has watched the market realizes the value is being discovered, the price has gone up significantly in the last few years, with the nice Fox 20ga. guns being bought up, thereby reducing the available guns on the market. This gun, sn262131 built in 1930, is NOT one of the normal Fox Sterlingworths. First, the FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION is phenomenal with 99% case color, 97% barrel and trigger guard blue, and most all of the factory varnish remaining. It still has the "jewelling" marks on the breech end of the barrels. Second, this is the first Sterlingworth I have ever seen with a factory 1/2 round pistol grip stock. McIntosh's book says they did not provide this option, and I have always believed that. But we have removed this stock and examined it closely, with photos, and it is factory issued and installed. Plus, it has great dimensions! The gun has been carried and hunted, evidenced by the many minor marks on the wood. but it has been cared for well and the metal is near new. We had considered restoring the wood (can be done to perfection for $390) but decided this is a collectible quality gun and we will leave that decision to the next owner. In the world of investment quality guns, condition reigns king, and this gun has it for sure. As hard as it is to even find a decent ejector 20ga. Fox, this one will always be highly desirable. And as far as the "PHILLY/SAVAGE" debate goes, I can say definitively this Sterlingworth is as good as any ever made with perfect wood to metal fit, put together with all Philly parts only a few months after the acquisition by Savage Arms. This is a Philly Fox with a Savage label on the barrels. At 5lbs. 14oz. and balanced dead on the hinge pin, it is a true delight of a fine vintage American double gun!
