GWYN AND CAMPBELL 1ST MODEL BREECH LOADING CAVALRY CARBINE CA. 1863 IN 8TH IOWA CAV. VOLS. SERIAL RANGE. All original and complete except the rear sight leaf which missing. Also known as the “GRAPEVINE” and the “UNION” carbine. Serial numbered in the low 9xx range which places it in the very first shipment of these which largely went to the 8th Iowa Cavalry in 1863. This unit saw considerable service in the Atlanta Campaign with Sherman and thus this carbine shows much service. It is however in very good condition with dark patina on the metal and light wear on the stock. Stock is sound and has a faint remnant of the cartouche forward of the rear lock screw bolster. Lock markings visible but worn. Working order and has a fairly good bore that should clean even better. Quite scarce with only 4200 manufactured and a low survival rate.
