Known as the “Hall Carbine Affair” Model 1843 with 5000 of these obsolete smoothbore carbines sold off by the Ordnance Dept. in 1861 to a group of investors including Gen. John Fremont and J. P. Morgan for $3.50 each and who subsequently had them rifled at a cost of $1.00 each and then resold them to the Ordnance Dept. for $22.00 each. Caused a furor as one would expect. Very good plus and all original with crisp metal with deep grey brown patina mixed with some fine salt and pepper. Breech block stamped “U.S./S. NORTH/MIDLTN. CONN/1851”. Excellent wood with two very nice Govt. Inspector’s cartouches on the stock. One to the rear of the ring bar and one to the right side of the stock to the rear of the frame. Excellent working order and has a very nice bore. These saw considerable service particularly early in the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley and also in the hands of the Missouri and Illinois Cavalry in actions in Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri. It should be noted that they also saw service in the West prior to the Civil War with the 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons in various actions against hostiles. Nice example of a hard to find historic Civil War Carbine. SOLD Antique: Yes |
