An 1841 dated Johnson U.S. Model 1836 Army .54 caliber holster pistol modified and engraved in the Deringer fashion and the backstrap bearing the monogram “D.G.M.”. Backstrap and trigger guard floral engraved in the readily identifiable style used by Henry Deringer and his close imitators on their single shot pistols of the 1840’s and 1850’s. Trigger guard bow engraving most distinctive with an often seen floral cartouche. Screw head of hammer also engraved in a star burst also a Deringer hallmark. Barrel with no “U.S.” proof which is very unusual but does have the “JH/P” proofs at the top left breech. It also has an additional “P” proof struck at the left flat just above the stock line. This is also in the Deringer style as seen on his pistols of the early period which this early 1840’s era gun falls within. It is additionally “flash” browned (now faded) and has had a Deringer ramrod with it’s characteristic rail added in place of the issue steel rod and stirrup assembly. Stock checkered in Deringer fashion at the forend tip and the grip. Lock and hammer are casehardened and the barrel band and sideplate are blued as is the trigger guard. Excellent overall with original finish on the blued parts and minor flash brow on the barrel. Stock with the original finish. Lock and hammer retain nearly all the case hardening. Absolutely original in every respect. SOLD Antique: Yes |
