BRITISH BOXLOCK .50 CAL. PERCUSSION TURN-BARREL POCKET PISTOL WITH BIRMINGHAM PROOF MARKS CIRCA 1840-60. 9” o/a with 4” octagon smoothbore barrel with turn off grooves at muzzle. Birmingham proofs at breech of barrel and breech plug. Light floral engraved lock and hammer. Unsigned. Checkered walnut grip with silver oval escutcheon. Metal with light pitting patina mixed. Grip very good with small repair at the left top front near the juncture with the frame. Working order and reasonably good bore. Many inexpensive percussion pistols like this example without a maker name were sold to dealer’s in the U.S. for resale. Large numbers were sold to Civil War soldiers as secondary weapons.
