Killed when his plane crashed August 24, 1932 while flying a rescue mission to save Marine flyers downed in the Nicaraguan jungle. After flying numerous sorties to drop supplies to the stranded Marines his plane for reasons unknown. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions. This wonderful sword is of extra quality and is in excellent condition. Has it’s original case and portapee. The nickel scabbard is engraved with his initials in a script monogram and the blade etched “RAYMOND P. RUTLEDGE” and “UNITED STATES MARINES. 100% original and in excellent condition overall with the exception of the case and portapee which are worn and slightly tattered.
