Description:
Serial #1743, .44 caliber, 9? barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This exquisite revolver is finished in an antique coin finish with an excellent and attractive pewter gray overall patina that has extensive deep relief engraving depicting the American eagle and shield on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the wedge, U.S. flag with ?US/1847? escutcheon on the right, bust portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the left side of the recoil shield, and ?UNION? framing the priming cut-out on the right. All of these embellishments are set against a mixture of Germanic oak leaf with acorn motif on the frame and classic Nimschke style floral scrollwork on the balance set off by typical New York type scalloped line borders. The engraving carries over onto the gristraps and brass trigger guard while the underside of the frame is signed ?J. ADAMS? in a small riband. The cylinder scene is 100% intact with further tastefully unobtrusive floral scroll highlights between the nipples. The fantastic ivory grips have a mellow, creamy, off-white color with subtle but visible grain and are relief carved on the left side with a view of Mount Rushmore. The revolver is mechanically excellent and currently has a form fitted wooden mainspring block installed under the grips to prevent the action from being cycled. Included with the revolver are pieces of correspondence dealing with the extensive enhancements performed on the revolver. The first is a letter dated May 16, 2012, and signed by John J. Adams Sr. detailing and authenticating the work he performed on the gun. The second letter is dated August 22, 2012, from Nutmeg Sports LLC (the company that made the grips and received the initial commission for the gun itself) and is signed by James V. Alaimo, the former superintendent of the Colt Custom Shop, detailing both the revolver as a whole as well as the work performed on the grip which they plainly state was fashioned from ivory imported prior to the 1989 embargo. This is a one-of-a-kind example of artistry performed by one of America's greatest living engravers and would make a fantastic addition to any collection; certainly it would make an excellent item for display.
