Description:
Serial #158872, .45-70, 30" barrel with a very good, lightly freckled bore (heaviest at the chamber). This rifle has matching numbers on the frame and barrel which retains about 85% of the original blue blending with a mellow plum-brown patina on the balance. This is an "Old" Model 1874 (made in the serial number range 157,000 - 159,000) which utilized reworked left-over percussion era locks so there is still a disk primer cover screw on the bottom of the frame even though there is no need nor provision for utilizing the Lawrence primers. There is some freckled gray fading at the muzzle and a few small specks of freckling with a series of minor peen marks along the exposed underside of the barrel ahead of the forend. The frame has a mottled gray patina speckled with mild freckling but the metal is smooth without any pits. The walnut stock and forend have an old varnish added during the period of use over scattered small handling marks and minor surface blemishes throughout. The iron patchbox and buttplate have a matching gray patina and exhibit wear commensurate to the rest of the rifle. This is a fine example of a metallic cartridge era Sharps military rifle and would make a wonderful addition to a collection. {Ref: "Sharps Firearms" by Frank Sellers, 1978} Antique
