Description: Inv. 5095 Springfield U.S. Model 1884, Caliber .45-70, Serial Number 4781XX. When I picked this one up from an estate I figured, just another tired, worn old trapdoor. Then as I started to clean it up and all kinds of black soot came off from everywhere, I then started working with interest only to find what I had acquired was an almost unused gun. The original blue is at least +95%. The loss contained to some light freckling of the barrel bands, all "U" marked, a rub mark from a bayonet and light pitting on the butt plate which is stamped U.S The case colored breach block and tang, again at least +95%. The walnut stock is very dark and retains almost all of it's original finish. Just slight scratches and dings. No chips or splinters missing. The left side has a beautiful cartouche, "SWP over 1889". The lock plate which is just lovely and is stamped with a sharp Eagle and U.S Springfield. The bore is beautifully sharp and crisp with just the slightest bit of graying. Even the chamber appears to show little if any use. A real centerpiece for the Early U.S. Military collector. $1395.
