Description:
A product of the Cold War era, this Merkel 47E carries the East German proof marks from Suhl on the barrel flats as well as the "Outstanding Quality" mark on the left side of the barrel lug above the serial number.  This gun was proofed in June of 1971 as evidenced by the three-digit (671) proofhouse date mark and there are no importer marks to be found. The right barrel is marked "SPECIAL - GEWEHRLAUFSTAHL" (gun barrel steel) and the left "GEBR. MERKEL SUHL" (Merkel brothers, Suhl) with a second line reading: "Made in GDR" (German Democratic Republic, or East Germany).  The action is a scalloped boxlock with cocking indicators, Greener crossbolt and Deeley forend release.  The lower rib is drilled and tapped (plug screws installed) for a front sling attachment and there is a screw plug in the buttstock for the rear swivel.  Well over forty years have passed since this gun was built in the former East Germany and the action is as tight as the day it was made.  All outward appearences suggust that this gun was used very little, and it remains in as close to "As New" condition as could reasonably be expected.
