This is a copy of John Twigg, who I think was possibly the finest maker of the 18thcentury. It is a copy of an English rifle on a German pattern that is, the rifle is carved and has some engraving but has a hook breech with keys and limit pins. It’s barrel is 41” long and is 1 1/8” at the breech and 1” at the muzzle. I have hand made all the hardware for the gun including the lock and single set trigger, which took sometime as it is a copy of his coach gun lock and has a separate pan cover which is detachable from the frizzen by means of a button at the top of the frizzen. Both the pan cover and frizzen work off of the same axle by means of a split frizzen spring. The pan is 24 kt. Gold filled and is wrapped over  the fence on the inside so gas from the touchhole can not get under it to blow it out.
If you have a copy of the book “Great British Gunmakers” 1740-1790 by Keith Neal and D.H.L. Back, color plates #5 and 6, and page 175, take a look for at the cheek piece side.
I am 83 and this is the last gun that I shall ever make as I am in my 60th year as a maker.
The wood is from Frank Pachmyer and was brought over by old Gus sometime before 1920. I don’t know where it was cut, but it’s not from France. It is the hardest piece of European walnut I have ever worked on.                                                Jack T. Haugh
