Description:
Serial #1923, .577 Snider, 19 1/4? barrel with a very good bore that has spots of dark freckling along its length. This is an 1871 dated carbine with the requisite extensive War Department markings throughout and ?(crown)/VR? cypher on the lockplate. It runs right inline with some of the Sniders on the serial number list from Klancher's Arms and Accoutrements of the Mounted Police. For instance S# 1820, 1939, 1951, 1966, The gun shows no unit or issue markings which is unusual and probably points toward it being and RCMP issue. The barrel has an attractive dark plum-brown patina with scattered areas of mild freckling blending into the still strong original blue finish that remains on about 85% plus of the metal. This mixture of original blue tinged with plum-browncontinues on the breechblock (which has some minor peen marks on the underside around the serial number(which could have been an attempt hide the same) and the hammer and lock have traces of muted color case-hardening in the otherwise dark gray patina with scattered specks of freckling and pinprick pitting here and there. The brass trigger guard, barrel band, and buttplate have patinas that range from ruddy brown (on the band) to a pale yellow-ochre color on the guard and butt. The rear sight base tangent ear is missing on the right side but the rear sight is still functional. The walnut stock has an added armory finish over minor handling marks and surface blemishes throughout, heaviest near the butt on the left side, and there are two short hairline with-the-grain cracks: one running back from the band on the left side and one running back from the breech just ahead of the rear lockplate screw head. The cartouche is still clear and fairly crisp on the right side of the butt and there is a still legible ?DC? Canadian marking without diamond (a rare marking according to page 66 of Edgecombe's Defending the Dominion. on the left. This is a very nice and rare Snider carbine that could very possibly be an RCMP issue. Antique
