Description:
SOLD... Here is a decent entry grade shooter / collector antique 1873 Winchester rifle. Has standard 24" octagon barrel.  S/N 185604 and MFG in 1885. Fairly early third model. Caliber is the great shooting 38-40. The bore is very good++ and near fine. Still has shine with just very minor frosting with hardly any roughness at all. NO big pits, rings or bulges. Strong rifling all the way through. It shoots great. The mechanics are excellent. Feeds, fires and ejects flawlessly. NO backed out primers or bulged cases. Hammer notches are perfect and hold half and full cock very positive. I have taken this gun apart inside and it still shows case colors inside on the hardened parts. You will not find a tighter 1873 Winchester period. The metal is over all a light gray with very light salt and pepper pitting and has probably been lightly clean some time in the past. Nothing deep and just mostly barely into the metal. The close up photos of the address shows the worst and make sit look much worse than it really is in hand. All the markings are there and readable. Just a little light from the peppering and cleaning. Excellent caliber markings on the brass carrier which are usually worn and hard to read. Still has the original dust cover that still retracts with the lever throw. The rear sight is a period replacement flip up style. The front sight is a Lyman modern replacement with brass bead. It has an excellent sight picture and you can buy original style aftermarket sights very reasonable for these if you wish to do so. I do have an original rear sight and elevator for this gun I will install for an extra $125 if you wish to do so also. This gun also has a factory sling swivel that is dovetailed into the barrel. The butt stock also has a sling swivel but is unlike anything I have seen from the factory. Probably the original pulled loose and was replaced with this one. An excellent job by all means and is absolutely a period replacement. Is inlayed into the stock with a diamond shaped piece of brass held by 4 screws. A perfect job and very interesting. I can send photos of this if you need to see it. Does not detract at all from the gun. The wood is really very fine on this gun. Fits perfectly tight and proud  to the metal. Never cleaned on or sanded. NO cracks or splits with just VERY minor honest usage dings and mars. Has one tiny 1/8" chip at the upper right side along the tang and receiver as you can see in the upper tang photo. Just very fine wood and much better than the metal condition. This gun has probably had some poor storage over the years but the mechanics, the insides, the bore and the wood are just about perfect. This will make someone a fantastic shooter and at a reasonable price less than $2,000 !!! The 38-40 is a much better shooting round than the 44-40. You can’t go wrong on this one as I have it priced right with the condition of the metal and the sights.. Call 765-728-8049 or e-mail me with any questions or more photos as my home phone has been acting up lately. $50 insured shipping. Gun will be double boxed. Bubble wrapped with packing so no damage. I send post office registered mail. NO FFL needed as is antique. Overseas buyers welcome but will be extra shipping of course.
