Description:
COLT'S SAA EARLY SMOKELESS POWDER .45 COLT ANTIQUE REVOLVER

BLACKPOWDER TRANSITION PERIOD FIREARM MANUFACTURED IN 1897

Own a Piece of History!

Up for sale is a USED Colt's Single Action Army .45 Colt caliber revolver. This classic six-shooter has a 7 1/2 inch barrel, Mother of Pearl grips and a Nickle finish.

This 1897 manufactured firearm has matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger bow and grip strap (serial #107874). The bore is very good, showing no pitting, dings, dents or walnuts. The front sight has been welded up then cut into a patridge style sight. The Mother of Pearl grips are in very good condition even though the right panel has two small chips, one at the toe and the other at the heel. The gun has been re-finished in nickle. We have no idea if nickle was the factory original finish.

The patent date format is two lines with three dates, the circled rampant Colt trademark is on left side of the frame to the right of the patent dates and the caliber designation is on the barrel, as is appropriate, do the the changes made for the Late Black Powder SAA's (Manufactured 1890 to 1896, approximate serial #'s 130,000-165,000) and carried through to (and beyond) the "blackpowder transition" period Early Smokeless Powder SAA's (Manufactured 1896 to 1899, approximate serial #'s 165,000 - 182,000).

The Early Smokeless Powder SAA's had several important physical characteristics changed during the "blackpowder transition" period. The most notable and noticeable change occurred with the model change in 1896. At this time the vertical screw retaining the cylinder pin was eliminated in favor of the horizontal latch as was in use since 1877 on the double action models. As this change occurred at the same time as the introduction of ammunition loaded with smokeless powder, which was more powerful (and less corrosive) than black powder, the adoption of the more modern and tool-free horizontal latch gave Colt customers an easy way to tell the new, stronger smokeless powder frame from the old, weaker blackpowder frame. The transition to smokeless powder forced firearms manufacturers to modify and strengthen their products in order to safely use the new ammunition.

Mechanically sound and in working condition.
However, as buyers are responsible for their own safety, we strongly recommend that any and all used firearms should always be checked by a competent gunsmith before you consider firing them.

DO NOT CONSIDER THIS FIREARM AS SHOOTABLE OR SAFE TO SHOOT UNTIL IT HAS BEEN CERTIFIED AS SUCH BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH.

This firearm qualifies as a pre-1898 antique-no FFL is required for transfer.
