Description:
NSN, Smoothbore .64 Caliber (approx. 17 Bore)/Rifle .42 Caliber, 29 3/4" barrels with very good, lightly freckled bores. This is robust and handsome gun that has an overall dull pewter gray patina mixing with a mellow plum - brown color along the barrel and a slighter lighter tone along the other metal components. The barrels have a wide, flat rib along the top which is marked "J. GRAINGER KING ST. WEST TORONTO, CW" at the breech and a three - leaf express sight with a soldered repair on the fixed leaf. The locks are also marked "J. GRAINGER" and have simple but attractive engraved borders. The simple and clean geometric design carries over onto the breech and tang with a further dolphin theme present on the hammers. Both locks are tight and function flawlessly. The substantial walnut stock has an added varnish finish over lightly sanded wood and is fastened by a single wedge with oval escutcheons as well as an ornately engraved triggerguard with urn finial and scrollwork vignette along the exterior of the bow. The checkering at the wrist is slightly softened but still fairly deep and there are a few minor handling marks and surface blemishes throughout. The buttplate is also dull gray and also has the same light geometric engraving along the top tang. The gun comes with an old brass - tipped wooden ramrod held by a cylindrical thimble with sling eyelet and an ornate tail-pipe with stylized thistle finial. There is no rear sling attachment, just an octagonal nickel silver escutcheon on the belly of the stock. John Grainger moved to Toronto from England in 1854 and set up shop in 106 King Street West. Grainger's son William was taken into the business in 1856 when the firm was renamed John Grainger & Son (which would indicate that this gun was made in 1854 or '55). They remained in business until about 1868 when they seem to have moved back to England. Canadian - made guns from this period are very rarely seen in the U.S., especially in fine condition like this example. This is a very well-made and attractive gun and would make a great addition to any collection. {Ref: "The Canadian Gunsmiths 1608 to 1900" by S. James Gooding; 1962} Antique
