Description:
Have never seen one of these for sale at a gun show in over 40 years. Went to Gettysburg and saw an almost identical example that was recovered at Devils Den several days after the famous battle. Then, we go to buy some guns in Gettysburg and there it was. I can find no markings on this gun but from everything I have read about these guns, they were a one of a kind gunsmith made rifle. This is probably  not a target bench rest rifle as there was no such competition at the time , that I am aware of, that sports a full length scope , an item that had only been invented within tens years of the war and target guns were usually in smaller calibers. This is a man killer .50 caliber that weighs a whopping 22lbs. It has the false muzzle and is a half stock Pennsylvania style rifle, percussion, side lock with heavy pinned front stock and Double set triggers. Barrel is 36 oct to round and gun comes equipped with a full length 40"  Malcombe style sniper scope that still works with good clear optics. Gun works like it should and there is no corrosion at the nipple. The bore is minty and looks like it is an 8-groove. The wood is in beautiful condition which is surprising given such a huge heavy barrel. The wood is crack free with a lovely never touched shiny patina. Brass has never been cleaned. Gun metal is factory browned and remains a lovely rich patina free of any pitting. It is a documented fact (Snipers of the Civil War book)  that a Confederate General in charge of Artillery was killed from 1500 yards from a sniper, an art that took on new dimensions during the Civil War when Generals lead their men while snipers tried to take out the leadership. Bottom of rear stock has threaded brass lined hole in which a rear support can be screwed in (pictured) and a custom made front barrel caddy which is also pictured. An absolutely amazing piece of Civil War history and probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. When you look up Civil War sniper rifle, you usually get a standard Sharps or Enfield with a Popcycle peep site, not a 22 pound  sniper rifle with full length sniper scope with fitted optics and in this all original fine condition, worthy of the finest Civil War or Weapons collection. No need for any paper work. A crowd and conversation will surely follow this gun wherever it is displayed. When will you ever see another such fine example?
