Description:
This is a beautiful example of a U.S. Colt Model 1873 Cavalry revolver manufactured in 1875.   It was subsequently refurbished by Colt in 1895 for issue to the New York State Militia.  The Principal Sub-Inspector was A. P. Casey.  He was assisted by W. W. Johnson for a time and his "J" inspection mark appears on the trigger guard. The serial number is "17282", has a 7 1/2 inch barrel and caliber is 45 Long Colt. The revolver's serial number "17282" is listed on page 43 of Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers by Kopec and Fenn and is one of the 840 Model 1873 Cavalry revolvers issued to the New Your State Militia.
The revolver appears to have had the standard Colt military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder and trigger guard with casehardened frame and hammer.  The top of the barrel is marked with the one line Colt address and appropriately flanked by "+" on each end.  The left frame is marked with the two line, two patent dates followed by "U.S.". The barrel serial number is "9593" and according to Kopec was fitted to this frame by Colt while being refurbished in 1895 for reissue to the NY State Militia. The ejector rod head is the early round "donut" pattern, possesses the standard blade front sight and frame notch rear sights and is fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip serial number 2495.  The right side of the grip is stamped "1st B" indicating First Battery. Those markings were subsequently hashed out and "28 NY" " applied for the 28th Separate Company according to Kopec and Fenn. The bottom right side of the grip is appropriately stamped "R.A.C.".
This revolver has an interesting history that is detailed in the Kopec letter of authentication. Kopec states on page 2 of his letter "In looking over this interesting revolver we have discovered several noteworthy characteristics."  We encourage you to read the letter for a full description and evolution of this revolver.
Condition is Very Good. The barrel retains 20% scattered blue finish. The balance is a smooth gray patina. The hammer and frame retain case color in protected areas. There are minor dings and handling marks as expected with military use.
Mechanically fine with a crisp action.
