Rare N. Whitmore Boston Heavy Barrel Civil War Sniper Rifle

The left barrel flat is stamped N. (Nathaniel) Whitmore Cast Steel Boston. Whitmore made custom rifles at his shop in Boston from 1850-54 and this exact type of heavy rifle used by Snipers on both sides of the 1861-65 conflict. It is a .42 caliber with a mint bore. That condition and the high condition of the rifle, indicate it was well taken care of. Some of the special features include a 32" third octogon and 2/3's round barrel mounted with a globe front sight and a filler in rear slght slot. ( Lollipop target peep sight on tang) , single set adjustable trigger, original pewter appointed oak rod, Nickel plated butt plate (crescent) , engraved silver plaque on left cheek piece, fancy ornate engraved nickel trigger guard, nickel plated side decoration, engraved pewter cap box, engraved pewter nose cap with fine engraving on lock, hammer, breech and tang. Gun is in museum condition, incredible wood sans a single crack or chip anywhere. Browned barrel and action. Sharp markings and engraving. Weight is 15 libs. 1 1/8" at barrel end. Fantastic rifle. Antique so can be sent right to your door. If you purchase the book on the Berdan Sharp Shooters, you will see numerous photographs of like rifles which were the preferred sniper rifles of the Berdan troops until they finally got their Sharps with double set triggers.
