Description:
Limber chest stenciled on the front face "3rd Battery over NGSNY" (National Guard State of New York). This chest is 17 1/2" wide 30" across the top, 28 3/4" across the body and 10 1/2" deep. This piece retains its original copper covered top. All of the original iron hardwear is in place. This piece was permanently attached to a limber carriage and was never fitted with the upraised handles. Based on the smaller size of the chest, it is suggested that this piece was designed for use with a mountain howitzer or a Gatling gun. The 3rd Battery-Light Artillery was created in 1864 (howitzer battery). It was converted to a Gatling gun battery in 1873. This unit served the state in July of 1877 during the railway riots at Hornellsville as well as the motormen's strike in Brooklyn in 1895. The work "The Gatling Gun" by Wall and Toppel mentions the role of the New York riots and Hornersville. The units designation was changed to Batt N in Jan of 1878 and to 3rd Battery in 1882. This unit was based in the 3rd Battery Armory, Clemont Ave, Fort Green Brooklyn which was originally the home of the 23 Reg. Some of the basic information on this unit is included in the enclosed 5 pages of information. This chest is in excellent original condition, it has not been restored in any manner. The copper top is stained and shows its obvious age. The stenciling and paint are all correct and original. The top portion of the locking hasp is missing as is the foot portion of the rear attachment bar. The end feet are in place. There is about 5% original paint loss. The decision as to restoring the paint is that of the next owner. -This is a very scarce piece of American militaria. A piece for the cannon, Gatling gun or the decorator.
