Description:
S# 63, 41 caliber, 44 inch 1/3 Octagon swamped barrel with wedding ring transition and very good smooth bore. This fine dual valve air gun is marked "N63 Wentzlau A Neuwidt" on lockplate. This maker is listed by Stockel at working from 1747-84. The air reservoir is concealed in the hollow wood buttstock with the fill valve concealed under a spring loaded gate in buttplate actuated by a sliding button. This type of gun is described as transitional with the maker mentioned in Eldon Wolff's "Airguns". See figure 46 (Pg 90) showing a piece with striking similarities. The pan carries a threaded rod that screws into pan edge and plugs the touch hole. Unlike the piece discussed by Wolf, this touch hole connects to the barrel channel. The lock has no bridle or roller, it is very nicely sculpted with file work on spring edges and engraved deer & dog on plate and lovely geometric design on frizzen. The brass triggerguard buttplate, ramrod ferrules, tailpipe, sideplate, and sights show engraved animals, people and geometric designs with scrolls. Barrel and tang show similar engraving. The stock is relief carved around tang, comb, triggerguard and up bottom of forend, features a horn tip, and shows shrinkage cracks around reservoir in butt. These two (one each side) cracks show old filler in some areas. The tapered ramrod appears original. Unfortunately it is broken and missing about five inches at tulip tip end, as well as a repaired break in the middle. This is a beautiful example of a fixed butt reservoir two valve airgun, probably built between 1760 and 1785, with signs of honest use. This could easily be the center piece of any airgun collection. Ref: Eldon G Wolf, Air Guns 1958. A similar gun SN 61 was sold by Herman Historica in the fall sale of 2007. Antique
