Description:
NSN, .76 caliber, 39 1/4" barrel with a good, lightly freckled and pitted bore. This is an unconverted, original flintlock musket with "(crown)/GR", "TOWER" marked lock that has a smooth plum-brown patina along the barrel and mottled pewter gray patina on the lock itself. The breech of the barrel and lock surrounding the pan have light-moderate pitting as one would expect from an original musket. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor surface blemishes throughout the old re-applied varnish finish as well as a moderate bruise on the right side of the wrist and a short with-the-grain crack on the left side at the rear sideplate screw. Deeply carved original unit markings are present on the left side of the buttstock: "No.71/1:BN. N.S.M." (Gun No. 71, 1st Battalion, Nova Scotia Militia.) No sling swivels are present and the ramrod is a well made modern reproduction. Included with the musket is an original socket bayonet (for a 2nd Pattern Brown Bess) whose condition is commensurate to the musket and is marked "S&G/HARVEY" on the inner flat just above the shank (Samuel and George Harvey 1779-1781). The musket is storekeeper marked and dated 1800 as are many of the Nova Scotia muskets. The year 1800 saw 7,200 men on the muster rolls of the Nova Scotia militia with the 1st Battalion located in Eastern Hants County and out of the town of Truro. Also included with this musket is an article on the markings of the Nova Scotia militia muskets by Dr. Ross MacInnis that was published in Vol 33, No 2 (May 1995) of the "Canadian Journal of Arms Collecting". This is a very good plus example of a rare regimentally marked Brown Bess with original bayonet. Antique
