Description:
S# 5828, 38 Rim or center fire, 26 3/8 inch barrel, good bore with strong rifling and patches of erosion. This early 1860's sporter features the first type long leaf sporting rear sight, one piece breech block with dual centerfire and rimfire ignition and matching numbers on frame, barrel, breechblock, and inside forend. The cast iron frame, forend cap and lever show a dark brown patina, barrel retains 75% blue with scattered oxidation, and butt plate shows a dark cold blued finish. The barrel markings are light and remains clearly legible, makers name on top flat is partly covered by rear sight. The extractor handle is a modern made replacement. Wood is sound with marks from use and oil stains and wears an added layer of finish. A very interesting early ballard with an unusual dual firing system. Antique.
