Description:
Serial #K41392, 11mm Gras, 32 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves. This is an 1877 dated rifle that has had the 1880 gas escape groove added to the receiver and retains about 80% of an armory re-applied blue finish that has left the markings and corners still crisp and sharp and has turned to a mellow plum-brown patina on the balance. There is silvering and fading along the projections and bearing surfaces as well as some minor peen marks at the muzzle, while a dull gray patina with even brown freckling is present on the trigger guard and matching numbered bolt. The rear sight is not complete and only has the graduated ladder remaining. The mechanism is somewhat tight but fully functional and the matching numbered walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes under the fairly thick added added oil finish. There are also some small chips missing from the edges of the ramrod channel and an old armory repair through the wrist on either side. This a handsome example of a French Gras in very good plus-near fine condition. Antique
