Description:
SOLD.. Here is a pretty nice ole 1881 Marlin. Caliber is in the highly sought after 45-70. Has standard 28" octagon barrel. Very early manufacture date S/N 6575 and MFG in 1883 second year production. The bore is very fine and very near excellent with just very light frosting. NO pitting, rings or bulges. Very strong and deep rifling. It shoots great. The mechanics are very tight and it feeds, fires and extracts perfectly but the ejector seems a little lazy sometimes on the last round out only.. It works perfectly on the other rounds ejected but just the last one out only. ?? The ejector is present and moves in and out with the lever so it can’t be too serious of a problem to fix. May just needs a good cleaning inside as there is quite a bit of old crud inside. Anyway I am leaving plenty of room on the price if you wanted to get it repaired which should be a very easy job for a good quality antique gun smith and not a major issue. Still has both guide fingers that guide the cartridges into the chamber. I do find this model with broken guides but these are perfect. The metal is a smooth medium brown patina with no pitting anywhere. It shows some staining darker spots here and there but no pitting. Nice looking gun. Original front and rear sights. The head of the trigger screw has no slot in it. Does not look like it was twisted off or anything like that and it is solid and the trigger functions perfectly so your guess is as good as mine here .. The wood is very nice also. The butt stock fits tight to the metal with no cracks or splits anywhere. The very front of the comb looks like it has been trimmed a bit for a tang sight but has been done long ago. See photos of the stock. Does not really detract but I did notice this and wanted to bring to your attention for an honest description.  The forearm fits tight also. Has a small sliver missing on the front right side by the forearm cap as can be seen in the photo. A couple tight grain cracks at the rear next to the receiver, one on both sides but NO big chunks missing on the right side as you will usually find on this model as the forearm is very thin in that area for the sliding loading gate and are very prone to cracking there. See photo. Very nice wood on this one and better than usually found. Markings are excellent. Hammer notches are firm and tight and all correct. Nothing fancy here but a decent 1881 Marlin in the right caliber with a great bore !!! These are very heavy and very well built guns that Marlin beat Winchester to the drawing board on the 45-70 caliber 5 years before the Winchester 1886 !!!  Here is your chance to buy one of these at a very reasonable price. You can not even come close to buying an 1886 in this caliber at this price so hurry if you have an interest in it. $50 insured shipping.
