Description:
NSN, .36 caliber, 36? octagon barrel with a very good bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome rifle that has an overall dark plum-brown patina along the metal that has some gray fading along some of the projecting edges (most noticeably on the barrel facets). There are some further spots of freckling as well as some light pitting on the breech end of the barrel surrounding the drum and nipple while the Golcher marked back-action lock has a matching dull brown patina. The barrel is equipped with a German silver front sight blade and distinctive semi-buckhorn style rear sight as well as two additional filled dovetails; one at the muzzle and one towards the breech. The stock has a pewter forend tip, ?S? shaped escutcheons at the barrel pins, a brass plate ahead of the lock, an ornate German silver trigger guard, and deeply arched crescent buttplate. Additionally, there is an inset moon on both sides of the ambidextrous cheek-piece, a tapered comma shape on the left side opposite the lock, and two expertly shaped German silver plates reinforcing the wrist on either side. These plates are very well made and firmly hold the wrist (which does have a visible crack across the the top). The action is fully functional as are the double-set triggers. This is a very nice American-made percussion rifle that has some unusual and folksy additions and embellishments. Antique
