Description:
Serial #V3441, 11mm CF (.43-77-380) 32" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a post Franco-Prussian War conversion of the 1866 Chassepot to metallic cartridge which was contracted to Kynoch in Britain. The guns were heavily modified and marked with the metal originally finished armory bright and now turned to a lightly cleaned bright gray patina with scattered small spots of mild brown freckling and some old dried protective grease on the bolt. The stock has a nice added blonde finish over very minor handling marks and small surface blemishes and a mismatched but correct iron ramrod is included. The origin and purpose of these rifle are a bit confused since they were almost immediately superseded by the Model 1874 Gras in French service and were instead offered for sale to countries and groups that did not have the manufacturing base to make modern small arms. This is a fine and mechanically tight example of one of these interesting and very well made rifles and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
