Description:
S# NSN, .36 caliber percussion, 33 inch octagon barrel with 8 groove one turn in 45 inches rifling, bright excellent bore. This lovely target rifle was probably built in the 1857 to 1861 period as barrel Is marked "MUZZY" on bottom flat (Muzzy & Company, Worcester, MA, 1857-1861). Lock is marked R. Diemar Taunton (Richard Diemar Taunton Ma, 1856-1878) and features a simple engraving style also used on hammer and drum. Rifle has original tube and pin front sight and extended rear peep adjustable at aperture for windage and elevation and also for elevation with a thumbscrew mounted in tang. Other features include hand poured pewter forend tip, German silver escutions for the dual barrel wedges, hooked breech construction, checkered straight grip stock with cheekpiece, double set triggers, and triggerguard with finger rest and pistol grip. Muzzle is cut for the included falso muzzle. Rifle remains in excellent condition with an aged brown patina on barrel and sights with scattered areas of light pitting. Lock, hammer and triggerguard show traces of case colors in a grey patina. Stock shows a few dings and scratches , right side of forend has a repaired grain crack near tip. A very fine pre civil war target rifle with original sights by a local Taunton Mass maker using a Worcester made barrel. Antique
