Description:
Offered for your consideration is this fine vintage 1873 Winchester saddle ring carbine in the desirible 44-40 caliber. Made in 1909 it has the standard 20 inch carbine barrel with the factory correct #44A carbine ladder style rear sight. The sight is intact and the elevation slide functions properly. The bore is well above average for the 1873, I would rate the bore a solid 7.5 to 8 on a 1-10 scale. The rifling is sharp and prominent with a trace of very light frosting. There is a shadow near the front barrel band that may be a very shallow ring in the bore. It's barely visable and certainly doesn't affect the accuracy. I shot two targets at 40 yards and got 1 1/2 inch and 1 3/4 inch groups using standard cowboy action loads, 200 gr. Lyman cast bullet sized .427 diameter pushed by 9 grs. Unique powder. The barrel, magazine and receiver have traces of blue but mostly a nice, even plum/silver patina. The receiver is fine mechanically, feeds, chambers, fires and ejects smoothly. Headspace is fine. The buttstock is tight and solid, no cracks, bad dents or extra holes. There apprears to be a crack on the right side but that is actually a stain, not a crack. I pulled the stock to check this and there are no cracks internally either. The forearm does have the usual crack as seems to be the norm for the 1873, it has been there for a long time and hasn't spread that I can see. Overall this is a fine vintage 1873 carbine that is very reliable and accurate. It will be great for cowboy action shooting and hunting.
