Description:
This is a classic British sword that measures 39” overall with a 32 1/2” straight, double-edged blade having 2/3 length single fullers. The steel has an overall bright original polish along the blade with scattered small spots of freckling near the tip as well as along the forte. The blade has 2/3 length etched panels with a thistle scrollwork motif framing the crown and “GR/V” cypher on the reverse (King George V; reigned 1910-1936). The Henry Wilkinson & Son trademark is present on the ricasso obverse while the Damascus star adorns the reverse. The full basket guard and domed pommel are in excellent condition; the plating is still bright with only very faint freckling marring the metal in a few spots. The scarlet felt lining and crimson pommel tassels are likewise in excellent shape, as is the shagreen grip which has an intact and tightly wound triple braided wire wrap. The original brown leather wrapped scabbard iis in fine shape with bright throat and chape with ball finial, however the leather wrap at the throat stud is a fairly recent replacement. Nevertheless, this is an excellent example of the most iconic of the British military blades: those of the Highland regiments; and made by Britain's most respected maker.
