Description:
Serial #1898C, .410 Bore, 25” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an RFI conversion of a B.S.A.-made, 1907 dated, SMLE Mk. I** rifle and has had the barrel bored out to .41 caliber but does not have the usual sheet metal loading tray and wooden filler block installed in the receiver. Rather, the magazine cut-off and “DP” marked magazine body (without the spring and follower) are still present. The metal has an overall darkly mottled plum-brown patina with some faint traces of armory blue on a few of the protected areas while the non-matching bolt has an overall mottled gray patina with some mild surface freckling and pinprick pitting on the handle. The forend, buttstock, and handguards are in very good condition with a few scattered light handling marks and small blemishes as well as an “RFI” marked brass stock disk, large “L” stamp at the heel of the butt, “IP” Indian Police stamp on the wrist, and a small and unobtrusive import mark on the right side of the action. A khaki canvassling in very good condition is also included. These interesting guns were developed for use against unarmed crowds and fired rounds based on a straight case .303 loaded either with a single round lead ball or twelve shot pellets (quite lethal at close range but at longer ranges they were merely very unpleasant). Amazingly, many of these remain in Indian police armories today and are still issued for crowd control purposes. This example is in very good-near fine condition and would make a neat addition to a collection of Lee-Enfields. {Ref. “India's Enfields 4th Edition” by Robert W. Edwards; 2003} FFL or C&R
