Description:
Serial #2885, .44 RF, 22" barrel with a very good bore that has some light pitting at the breech. This early Ballard has an overall pewter gray patina on the frame with scattered spots of small freckling and pinprick pitting. The manufacturer markings are faint but still fairly legible on the receiver top flat. The barrel has a darker plum-brown patina with some gray fading at the muzzle as do the other pieces of metal furniture with the exception of the hammer which has a rather nice later added fire blue finish. The walnut stock and forend are in good shape with numerous small handling blemishes and bruises throughout as well as some with-the-grain cracks where the forend meets the frame and on the wrist. The action still has firm lock-up and is fully functional. This is a very good plus example of a Civil War era Ballard overall. Antique
