BY RUSSELL. Serial number "C22736". Standard 22" barrel with six groove rifling which is excellent. Original sights front and back. Excellent period patina with NO cleaning whatsoever. Original buttstock with very faint cartouche and several use period of use dings which only enhance it's character. Forearm same with very nice wood to metal fit attesting to it's period original finish. Screws and pins all original. Never cleaned in any way. Original sling ring bar and ring. Sub-inspector's mark on left side of breech "TWR" for Thomas W. Russell (U.S. Army sub inspector). Serial number puts this in the 15 NY Cavalry range. A unit that saw much action in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War. The price reflects the fact that we cannot open the breech(falling block) and do not want to force it. Looking down bore it appears nothing is wrong. No reason why it cannot be made into perfect working order. Just need a gunsmith with the time to do it. SOLD Antique: Yes |
