Description:
This is a splendid 1920s era grouping that consists of: black bicorn chapeau with mohair trim, French-made USN Ensign's shoulder brooms, a USN private purchase officer's sword belt. The chapeau (size 7) is in fine condition with bright bullion end tassels and cockade strap with gilt USN eagle button. There are some areas of mild wear along the edges where the flocking has thinned, but these spots aren't particularly egregious and are commensurate with the age of the chapeau. The interior has a thin leather comfort band, pleated white silk lining, and embossed Schuele, Peppler & Kostens (Annapolis, MD) maker mark on the top of the crown. The epaulettes are in excellent shape and have bright bullion wire shoulder brooms, bright fittings, and bullion Ensign rank bars with silver embroidered fouled anchors. The sword belt is also in excellent condition and comes with the black and gold embroidered sword hangers as well. The accessories are housed in a japanned tin case with owner's name painted on the lid: “J.E. Fradd/U.S.N.” The case is in fine shape although there is minor wear and flaking of the exterior finish and one of the interior epaulette storage arms is partially detached due to overflexing after the keeper loop solder failed and it detached from the inner wall (the loop is still included, however). John Ernest Fradd (1902 – 1989) was a 1926 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and probably bought or received this set upon his graduation. He had a distinguished career as a command officer through World War II and, as a Captain, commanding officer of the U.S.S. Henrico APA-45 (June 1, 1950 – July 29, 1951), a Bayfield-class attack transport that had seen distinguished war service at both the Normandy and Okinawa landings prior to his assumption of command. Continuing the ship's excellent record of service during the Korean War, Capt. Fradd was in command when the ship took part in the landings at Inchon on September 15, 1950, and also the evacuation of retreating troops to the south later in the year following the Chinese entry into the conflict that December. Fradd eventually rose to the rank of Admiral and passed away in 1989. He is buried in the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery. This is an absolutely excellent piece of U.S. Naval memorabilia that belonged to a distinguished officer very early in his career.
