Description:
REVOLUTIONARY WAR CONNECTICUT COMMITTEE OF SAFETY CHERRY STOCK FLINTLOCK MUSKET CIRCA 1776-1777. .76 caliber smoothbore 46” barrel with “Dagger” shaped proof at the left side of the barrel in addition to a partially legible Germanic style rack number (NO ?21). The proof is illustrated in the “DER NEUE STOCKEL” as number 4917 on page 1450 of Vol. 2 and is attributed as Danish mid 1700’s. Very similar if not almost identical to the Connecticut Committee of Safety Musket by John Page of Preston, Conn. pictured on page 111 of George Moller’s AMERICAN MILITARY SHOULDER ARMS, Vol.1 and as described on pages 109-112. The Committee ordered an unknown number of barrels and locks from various Northern European makers and parceled them out to Connecticut Gunmakers such as John Page and Stephen Chandler to complete. The specifications were oriented to the pin barrel form of the Long Land British Musket and the mounts were a combination of iron and brass Germanic and English styles. The Mounts and stock as well as the very distinctive curled trigger of this musket indicate manufacture by Page. Handmade brass side plate in the form of a “snake” with the retaining pin serving as the snake’s eye. This unusual plate is reminiscent of the “DON’T TREAD ON ME” Revolutionary War New England flags. fine condition except for an old period of use blacksmith style wrist repair done with two iron plates which show the same age as the gun. Lock plate with light engraving similar to that seen on Committee of Safety muskets by Abijah Thompson. Hammer and frizzen are good replacements. Finely proportioned New England form cherry stock with graceful semi roman nose butt and a very fine “shell” carving at the barrel tang. With all it’s original nicely patinated finish. Very scarce and original except as noted.
