Description:
Joseph Lang & Son, London. Extraordinarily rare 12ga. side lock, light weight, game gun with key lock hand detachable locks completed ca. 1913-14
Weight 6 lbs. 7 oz. Stock Dimensions: 14x 2 1/8x 3x straight. Superb 28 chopper lump steel barrels with original 2 chambers (1 1/8 oz. Proofs) have absolutely brilliant bores (.729/.729) choked cyl/.012 with minimum wall thickness of .030/.027 and retaining about 95% of the original black finish. Peerless quality sidelock action is beautifully engraved and retains much of the original hardening color. Magnificent locks, retaining all the original color hardening, each have a tiny hinged door which, when lifted, allows insertion of a special key that, turned turn, unlatches a bolt in the rear of the lock plate allowing removal of the lock from the gun. The bridles are gold plated for corrosion protection and the hammers, tumblers, and sears are actually nickel plated for the same reason. I have seen nickel plated barrels on waterfowl guns of an earlier period, however, this is the first time I have ever seen this treatment given to internal lock parts -- very interesting. The key-lock mechanism, also quite interesting, was a feature instituted by the maker in 1910 and its use could not have been wide spread for it is very rare to see a gun so fitted. Also supplied in this set is a neat little leather wallet containing an original compliment of spare lock parts along with the original key for removing the locks. The whole supplied in the original makers case with all accessories and the original leather trade label and another paper label with loading information. Abercrombie and Fitch were the sole American agents for Joseph Lang and Son from 1913 through 1918 as noted on the trade label. Overall an exceptionally rare gun in superb, little used, original condition and cased complete with all the original accessories.
