Description:
RARE REVOLUTIONARY WAR FRENCH U. STATES SURCHARGED AND INSPECTED CHARLEVILLE MODEL 1766 FLINTLOCK MUSKET. .69 caliber 44 ½” barrel. This rare, all original and exceptionally fine American surcharged musket is one of the few known which is not only branded with the “U. STATES” surcharge on the stock but also bears the “IG” brand of John Gallot, Superintendent of the Continental Armory at Philadelphia, also known as the French Factory repair facility. The inside of the American made, Charlesville pattern lock is stamped “DAVIS” for James Davis a Continental arms maker employed to repair muskets at the facility. Undoubtedly this musket was received at the Philadelphia Armory for repair and was marked with Davis’ and Gallot’s names at that time. It may also be that the “US” was applied then as well. Top of the barrel at the breech is stamped with a small “US” stamp and “CS” stamped on the breech at the left side for the State of Connecticut. In superb all original condition with all the original parts as well as all the original screws. Retains the original dark metal patina and the original finish on the wood. Original swivels and ramrod. This exact gun is used as an illustration and example with definitive text on page 130, fig. 259 of Bill Ahearn’s excellent book “MUSKETS OF THE REVOLUTION”. With original bayonet. Almost never seen for sale and with top collection provenance.
