Description:
RARE AND FINE AMERICAN REV. WAR 26TH REGT. MARKED TOWER 2ND MODEL BROWN BESS FLINT MUSKET WITH TIGER MAPLE STOCK. AND BAYONET. .75 caliber 42” barrel. 100% original and superb in every respect. Although faint the barrel of this handsome musket is engraved “26” in large script British Ordnance regimental numerals. The 26th was one of the most fateful British units of the American Revolution because of it’s surrender to Continental forces at Ticonderoga and Crown Point in 1775. The prisoners of the 26th Regiment were taken to a prisoner of war camp at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It is highly probable that this musket was a damaged capture gun and that it also was taken to Lancaster for repair by one of the numerous German American rifle makers in that area. A stock of tiger maple would commonly be used in that area for making Pennsylvania longrifles and they could certainly have used the same type wood on this musket . Untouched in every respect. Lock nice marked “TOWER” and having the George III Cypher in the center of the plate forward of the hammer. Beautiful American gunsmith made brass bands and mounts. Retains all the original dark patina on the metal surfaces and all the finish on the stock. Brass mounts and bands are nicely mellowed. Even has all the original screws, the original swivels and ramrod. Original bayonet. Excellent collection provenance. One of the finest American Revolutionary muskets we have had.
