ORNATE AND INSCRIBED JACOB KUNZ PHILADELPHIA PERCUSSION HALF STOCK SHORT HUNTING RIFLE CIRCA 1840-45. .47 caliber deeply rifled 25 ½” octagon barrel signed “J. KUNZ PHILADA”. Lock also signed “J. KUNZ”. Profusely engraved on the lock, breech and upper tang. Double gold banded breech and double bands about the sterling silver wrist escutcheon. Finely engraved german silver mounts and patchbox which is also engraved “JOHN F. FRAZER” in script. Very high quality engraving which this famous maker was known for. Excellent walnut stock with the original finish. Excellent metal with all the original patina. Excellent bore and perfect working order. Double set triggers in working order. Original sling swivels and ramrod. Kunz was known to have made these short rifles which became popular in the 1840’s and 1850’s. He is considered one of the great makers and his engraved mounts are the most ornate of all the Pennsylvania makers. Notably one of his rifles is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. John F. Frazer was editor of the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia scientific papers and journals in the 1850’s and 1860’s. Extra fine quality and condition.
