Description:
RARE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA GEORGE III PATTERN 1756 FLINTLOCK SEA SERVICE PISTOL. 19” o/a with 12 “ round .56 caliber smoothbore barrel with Royal Ordnance proofs at the breech and the “W” barrel makers proof at the left breech. Lock stamped with the large early style Royal Cypher and “TOWER” as well as the “CROWN/BROAD ARROW” Ordnance acceptance mark below the pan. Walnut stock with brass mounts and with very fine “IR” inspection mark and a crisp Store keeper’s stamp at the right wrist. 18th Century “pinwheel” scrimshaw design forward of the trigger guard. These are quite typical designs done by Pennsylvania Dutch and Shenandoah Valley German’s during the period. Early style Pattern 1756 side plate with high tail and no rear pin. Superb all original condition and absolutely Revolutionary War period in every respect. Lock in fine working order and excellent bore. These saw service on both land and sea during the war as attested to by De Witt Bailey in his very well researched book “SMALL ARMS OF THE BRITISH FORCES IN AMERICA 1664-1815”, pg. 220. The best early one we have had and with an old Virginia collection provenance as well as signs of American use.
