Description: NSN, .58 caliber, 9 1/2? octagon barrels with very good, lightly pitted bores. These are handsome and well-proportioned pistols that have expertly rebrowned barrels with gorgeous tiger-stripe banding along their entire lengths. The locks, spurred trigger guards with , and breech bolsters have a dark pewter gray patina with crisp and sharp edges and engraving, while a mellow purple-black tarnish has begun to form on the silver wedge escutcheons, forend tips, and ramrod tailpipes. The English walnut stocks have minor handling marks and some light flaking of their original varnish finish as well as some mild wear at the rounded butts of both pistols. The pistols are housed in a period black walnut case with brass fittings that was converted into a gun case by adding partitions. The interior is lined with fairly recently added dark purple velvet and contains many period accessories: brass powder flask, bullet mould, cleaning jags, and brushes (the cleaning rod is no longer present). The case is in very good condition with some minor surface blemishes scattered about and the brass fittings have developed a mild yellow-ochre tarnish. Thomas Allport operated a shop on Digby St. in Birmingham from about 1807. His shop moved to Aston Rd. sometime after 1820 and was in business until 1851. This is a very nice set of pistols that have been expertly, but minimally, restored and retain a handsome antique aspect.
